The Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty

Sick businessman blowing nose in a tissue.Clogged sinuses can make you miserable – it can be difficult to do just about anything, from concentrating at work to having fun at your favorite hobby to exercising and even sleeping. Fortunately, there are treatments available that can help you to breathe free again. Balloon sinuplasty is one such treatment – read on for more information about this procedure and how it can benefit you!

What is balloon sinuplasty?

If sinuses become inflamed and swollen because of a cold or allergies, it can lead to even more problems. Mucus can be trapped in the sinuses, which can be painful in itself – but the mucus can also trap germs and an infection may result, besides the feeling of constant pain and pressure in your sinuses.

As you can see, it is important to clear your sinuses and keep them draining properly. Balloon sinuplasty (which is often also called “balloon sinus dilation”) can help. The procedure is performed at your doctor’s office using IV sedation. A tiny balloon is inserted into the sinuses, and then the balloon is inflated. The sinuses are enlarged, which gives the sinuses a chance to drain, and the balloon is removed.

What are the benefits to balloon sinuplasty?

The procedure can be helpful to patients who suffer from a variety of problems, such as snoring, sleep apnea, chronic or recurrent sinus infections, allergies, postnasal drip, and sinus headaches. Because it is not a surgical procedure, there is no scarring or bruising, and there is very little recovery time needed – you can get back to your regular activities not long after leaving your doctor’s office. Patients report no pain – just mild discomfort, and if this persists after the procedure an over-the-counter pain reliever can help. After the procedure, your doctor may also prescribe a special saline rinse, to remove any mucus remaining in your sinuses.

Balloon sinuplasty gets rid of painful mucus and helps to reduce sinus headaches, congestion, and more problems that can come from sinus infections. If you are considering balloon sinuplasty, call Lakeside Allergy ENT in Rockwall and Forney for a consultation today, at (972) 771-5443!
