Difference Between Sensorineural Vs. Conductive Hearing Loss

Hearing loss treatmentHearing loss is something that will affect everyone to some degree throughout our life. Perhaps it’s after one too many concerts or just progressive hearing loss from age. Either way, you may not have known there are two primary types of hearing loss that can affect your hearing. So let’s explore the difference between sensorineural versus conductive hearing loss so you can better decide what hearing loss treatment is right for you.

Sensorineural

This type of hearing is the most common form and is what probably comes to mind when you think of the causes of hearing loss. This kind of hearing loss is caused when the hair cells, ear nerves, or both get damaged and cannot properly transmit noise signals to the brain. This damage can be caused by various things, but this damage is often permanent, and the exact cause can be hard to pinpoint exactly. Some causes of Sensorineural damage include:

  • Trauma to the head or brain
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Tumors
  • Certain conditions
  • Different illnesses
  • Ear deformities
  • Aging

Conductive

Conductive hearing loss is a less common form of hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss is when something physically obstructs the ear from hearing properly. This is usually reversible once the obstruction is properly removed. This can be caused by different things, but some examples are:

  • Allergies
  • Excessive or impacted earwax
  • Benign tumors
  • Infection
  • Fluid build-up
  • Certain head trauma
  • Foreign objects
